Gulf of Girolata

Gulf of Girolata

The site is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is a miniature replica of the Gulf of Porto. Large red cliffs over 300 meters high line the gulf. It is a very protected site, which houses the village of Girolata, not visible from Porto because it is hidden by Monte Senino, the highest volcanic promontory in Europe.

Nestled in the heart of the Scandola Nature Reserve on the west coast of Corsica, the Gulf of Girolata is a wild and preserved jewel. Only accessible by boat or hiking trails, this little piece of paradise is a true sanctuary for flora and fauna, and a must-see for any visitor to Corsica.

Arriving in Girolata is an experience in itself. Whether you take the hiking trails or arrive by boat, the first view of the gulf is breathtaking. The turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea contrast with the deep red porphyry cliffs that surround the gulf, while the bright green of the Mediterranean vegetation adds an extra touch of color to this natural tableau.

In the center of the gulf, nestled at the foot of the mountains, is the small village of Girolata. With its red-roofed houses and small harbor, this picturesque hamlet offers a peaceful way of life to its inhabitants. In the summer, the village comes alive with the arrival of pleasure boats and visitors coming to discover this unique place.

The flora and fauna of Girolata are exceptionally rich. The gulf is a privileged place to observe marine birds, such as the Mediterranean shag and the yellow-legged gull. The seabed is home to a multitude of species, including the brown grouper, a protected species in the Mediterranean. The waters of the gulf are also a passage for dolphins and sea turtles.

The hiking trails around Girolata are an excellent way to discover the wild beauty of the region. The “sentier du facteur” trail, which connects the village of Girolata to the Col de la Croix, offers a panoramic view of the gulf and the surrounding mountains. The hike is demanding but the reward is worth the effort: an unobstructed view of one of Corsica’s most beautiful panoramas.

For the more adventurous, the GR 20 long-distance hiking trail, which crosses Corsica from north to south, passes near Girolata. It is a unique opportunity to discover the diversity of the island’s landscapes, from its fine sand beaches to its steep mountains.

Visiting the Gulf of Girolata is immersing oneself in the wild and preserved nature of Corsica. Whether you are a nature lover, an experienced hiker, or simply looking for a peaceful place to relax, Girolata is a destination not to be missed during your stay in Corsica.
